A How-To on Making E-Juice

Tired of paying for retail bottles of e-juice? Want to have control over what you’re vaping? It’s true: vaping can be an expensive hobby. And depending on how often you do it, you’ll probably appreciate saving a few bucks . Well, we’ve got just the solution: making your own e-liquid. Many vapers out there prefer making their own e-liquid to buying everything, allowing themselves complete control of the level of nicotine they’re getting, as well as the amount of flavour. Why not give it a shot? With a little preparation, making your own e-liquid can be satisfying and just as good as what you would find at your local vaping shop.

Need some guidance? We’ve laid out a step-by-step guide on how to make e-juice right here, so you’ll be mixing your own brew in no time!

1) Find your recipe.

2) Make sure you’ve got everything you need. This will include the four ingredients that go into e-liquid:

The bases (2):

And also:

  • Flavouring – choose your favourite concentrate of thousands available out there, like these e-juice flavors.
  • Nicotine (not necessary for nicotine-free vaping)

Feel like you’re back in high school chemistry? You kind of are – but this is much more fun. We promise. And easier, too.

In addition to the ingredients, you’ll also need some equipment:

  • Scales for mixing by weight. Make sure they’re accurate to 0.01g.
  • Syringes to mix by volume.
  • E-juice bottles for experimenting to find the perfect combination.
  • Labels so you know exactly what everything is.
  • Storage bottles to keep the ingredients.

3) Decide on your PG/VG ratio and nicotine level. We recommend sticking with the ratio that’s recommended in your chosen recipe. Once you’ve had a bit more practice, you can experiment with different ratios for plus-ohm and sub-ohm vaping.

4) Next, you’ll need to figure out the amount of each ingredient to use. This can be tricky, so we recommend finding an online juice calculator for best results.

5) Get mixing! Make sure your work space is clean and hygienic; it’s a good idea to do everything on a plastic tray to avoid spillage. We recommend wearing rubber gloves. If you’re using a scale, you’ll get your measurements by weight. If you do it by volume, you’ll add everything to an empty bottle. Note: Scale measuring is more accurate. You’ll add your nicotine first, then the flavour, and finally the PG and VG.

6) Steep your mixture, which will replace that harsh taste with a smooth, pleasant flavour. You’ll know it’s steeped long enough when the colour becomes darker, which can take a few days or even weeks, depending on the batch and the conditions it’s in while steeping.

Pro tip: Make your e-liquid in small batches as you’ll waste a lot of money if you make a big batch that you don’t like. Also, be cautious with adding nicotine, as it can be toxic. It’ll be listed in the number of milligrams per millimeter of liquid.
